Whitfieldia : Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F) / T – tropical, minimum of 18°C (65°F)

Family: Acanthaceae

Tropical Africa

Whitfieldia elongata grows to about 60 cm (2 ft) in height before becoming tatty. It bears pure white tubular flowers whose petals curl outwards at the end and white bracts. It is one of those plants that has only recently been developed for the pot plant trade. I had only seen it in botanical collections until I spotted some planted in the interior of a shopping mall in, of all places, Oldham near Manchester. It is good to see a more diverse range of plants becoming available and this is well worth growing, flowering as it does for a long time during the summer. As with closely related plants in the same family it will need to be pruned hard after flowering and encouraged with warmth and light to grow back to flowering size. Cuttings strike easily so that a succession of new plants can be raised.
