Vinca: Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Apocynaceae

Vinca rosea, the Madagascar Periwinkle, is often called Catharanthus roseus. It makes a pretty little flowering plant which will bloom from spring to autumn. Although it is possible to keep old plants going for another year it is far better to raise fresh ones from seed annually. This should be sown just beneath the surface of a peaty compost and germinated in the dark at 18-21°C (65-70°F). V. rosea grows to just over 30 cm (1 ft) high and has bright pink flowers. V. r. ‘Little Princess’ is pale pink and ‘Little Bright Eye’ white with a pink centre. Attractive seed mixtures with different coloured flowers are available. To grow good plants a warm greenhouse will be necessary to provide the warmth for the young plants early in the year.
