Using lawn-mowings

Lawn-mowings are the cheapest mulch, or surface spread, and sackfuls can be gathered beside every suburban footpath. Spread them between all bush fruit as weed suppressors and moisture holders, but beware of using the first cut from grass to which a selective weedkiller has been applied, because such mowings will cause damage.

Lawn-mowings also make good compost material, provided that the heap is not built entirely of them and that there is a good air supply and some layers of lime. Otherwise, the heap will quickly become a slippery mess which is stinking and unrotted because of over-acidity and lack of air.
