Trachelospermum : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only / C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Apocynaceae

Trachelospermum jasminioides from China is often sold as a tender climber for outside. In all but the mildest areas, however, it can be difficult to keep through long cold winters unless very sheltered. It makes an excellent plant for a frost free house where the close atmosphere will enhance the fragrance from the small star-shaped white flowers produced during summer. T.j. ‘Variegatum’ is the extremely attractive variegated form which is not so easy to find but well worth searching for. Equally unusual are a number of named varieties with unusually marked leaves. They all require a good support to get them climbing initially but they will eventually become self supporting and reach great heights unless pruned. Pruning simply consists of cutting back unwanted shoots but in such a way that it does not appear as if they have been ‘hacked back’.
