Tomato: Lycopersicon esculentum

Tomatoes or love apples, as they are also known, belong to the Solanaceae family.

They are a delicious, very healthy fruit that has been used in cooking for a long time. The small bush varieties that have been developed especially for growing in containers on balconies and terraces have particularly aromatic fruits. However, even the plants of small fruited varieties such as cherry or cocktail tomatoes can reach a height of 2 m (6 ft 6 in). It is therefore important to check the ultimate height of the plant when choosing the variety if space is at a premium. Tomatoes can be sown indoors in spring or bought as seedlings that are planted out after all clanger of frost has passed.

They need a very sunny, warm position where they are protected from the rain and wind and fertile soil, enriched with fertilizer. They need plenty of water and weekly applications of fertilizer while the fruits develop. To ensure a good yield, it is important remove the side-shoots. Green fruits and other parts of the plant contain poisonous alkaloids.
