Switch Grass: Panicum Virgatum
Many of the 400 species of the Panicum genus, a member of the Poaceae family, are particularly popular with florists for their elegant panicles of spikelets. Switch grass is an excellent visual screen and provides effective protection against the wind on balconies and terraces because it can grow up to 100 cm (39 in) high.
Specimens are particularly decorative when planted on their own in a large container. The stems and leaves turn pale to reddish brown in autumn. The large, arching panicles of tiny spikelets appear in late summer and acquire a reddish to bronze sheen in autumn. Switch grass grows in sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, well-drained. Although it will tolerate dry conditions, it should be watered regularly and be kept wet rather than moist. Moderate feeding is recommended. Alter the winter, it can be cut back and propagated from seed or by division.
