Strophanthus grandiflorus is a climber from tropical South Africa which is grown for its curious dull yellow, red streaked flowers which grow as a tube that opens out and divides into sections which end in six or more 2.5-cm (1-in) long twisted tails. S. speciosus from South Africa is more of an upright shrub that does not require such high temperatures. The yellowish flowers are spotted with red. These are usually obtained as the quite large seed which should be sown in spring.
