I think most people have heard of or seen the Bird of Paradise Flower which is also a remarkably easy plant to grow. This is Strelitzia reginae which produces amazing orange and purple flowers held on stout stalks that really do look just like the heads of elegant birds. Although it is said that they must have a minimum of 10°C (50°F) my aunt has flowered a specimen in a pot regularly which she keeps just frost free over winter. In a large greenhouse they are best planted out where a large clump can be formed. They will also flower very dependably during late spring and early summer in pots of well-fed and well-drained loam-based compost. Propagation is usually by division or suckers. Seed is easy to get hold of and should be soaked for 24 hours before sowing in moist sand at 24°C (75°F). As soon as individual seedlings germinate they should be pricked out into separate pots.
