Sphaeralcea : Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Malvaceae

Possibly a little difficult to find, these plants are well worth tracking down. Sphaeralcea umbellata from Mexico will make a tall shrub of 3 m (10 ft) if not pruned regularly after flowering. Fortunately, it will flower as a small potted plant and will even do well outdoors in the summer bearing its bright red flowers towards the end of summer. When pruning large specimens care will be needed, as small hairs will irritate skin and cause coughing if breathed in. In a small greenhouse it is better to raise new plants regularly to replace the older ones as successive hard prunings will weaken them in time. Cuttings 8-10 cm (3—4 in) long taken during spring and summer are easy to root.
