Spathiphyllum: Greenhouse Plants

T – tropical, minimum of 18°C (65°F)

Family: Araceae

Spathiphyllum wallisii, the Peace Lily from Colombia and Venezuela, is an elegant plant which really needs a tropical house to do well. It is ideal as a plant to stand around bromeliad trees and tall plants as it can tolerate shade well. Unless it really is too dark flowers will be produced at virtually any time of the year. They are, in shape, typical of the family with a white spathe changing with age to green. In all the plant is not more than 30 cm (1 ft) tall but is more often represented by the hybrid S. X ‘Mauna Loa’ which reaches a good 60 cm (2 ft) or more. During spring and summer plants can be divided and repotted. I have found divisions often slow to get going especially if higher temperatures cannot be given. They need very careful watering at this stage.
