Rehmannia: Greenhouse Plants

C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Scrophulariaceae

China and Japan

These attractive perennials are easily raised from seed sown at 15-18°C (60-65°F) and kept in a light place where they will germinate within three or four weeks. Flowers are similar in structure to the Foxglove. Rehmannia angulata (R. elata) has red flowers with orange dots and is never much more than 60 cm (2 ft) in height. It is best treated as a biennial. R. glutinosa is also grown, the flowers giving the impression of being mostly pinky-purple. Flowering time is mainly in May. Well worth trying as an unusual though easy-to-flower subject.
