Plectranthus: Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Labiatae

I have my reservations whether anybody with limited greenhouse space would want to sacrifice valuable room to grow these. Plectranthus coleoides ‘Marginatus’ from India will grow upright to about 30 cm (1 ft) before bending over and trailing. Its leaves have a strange, not unpleasant smell when crushed. It will eventually bear rather insignificant white flowers. P. oertendahlii from South Africa is a rather chaotic plant with rounded leaves with white veins, red undersides and white flowers. The fleshy stems are pink. P. ciliatus is perhaps a bit more inspiring as it has mauve-blue flowers in late summer.
