Ochna: Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Ochnaceae

Only one species, Ochna serrulata, is easily obtainable. It comes from Natal and makes a medium sized shrubby plant which has attractive red tints to the new growth. The flowers are yellow and appear in spring but more attractive by far are the fruits which follow. These are shiny black and sit on a waxy calyx which recurves from them and is bright red. Very little pruning is required. Cuttings may be taken in summer or seed sown in spring.
