Lotus : Greenhouse Plants

C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Leguminosae

Lotus berthelotii from Tenerife is rightly named the Coral Gem. It is a perennial with long trailing branches covered with silvery needle-like leaves which make an excellent foil for the scarlet claw-shaped flowers which appear in May. This is an excellent plant for a hanging basket but is not easy to grow. It will thrive in cool airy conditions but dislikes being overwatered to a point where it almost pays to let plants nearly begin to droop before daring to water them again. Cuttings taken in spring should be grown on and planted into baskets for flowering the following year.
