Lagerstroemia : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only / C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Lythraceae

Lagerstroemia indica is the Crepe Myrtle from China and makes a very attractive late summer flowering shrub which can be almost hardy outside. Do not be dismayed if your plant drops all its leaves after flowering because they are deciduous. Plants are best pruned quite hard in winter to retain a compact shape. Cuttings can be taken in spring choosing short shoots with a heel. It is possible to train straight specimens as standards by taking off all the side shoots until the head is to be developed. The flowers are various shades of pink. There is also a white form.
