Iresine : Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Amaranthaceae

South America

There are two species in cultivation but I find Iresine lindenii rather dull and would rather concentrate on I. herbstii which is known variously by the rather ghastly names of Beefsteak Plant and Bloodleaf because of its maroon-red leaves and stems, the veins outlined in paler red. I. h. ‘Brilliantissima’ has larger even redder leaves and I. h. aureo-reticulata has golden veins on its green leaves. These are easy plants to grow, propagating well from cuttings. It is best to pinch out the shoot tips to encourage bushiness.
