Feijoa : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only

Family: Myrtaceae

I like Feijoa sellowiana, but this shrub never does well for me outside, although it can survive well on a south wall. It makes a good greenhouse plant with rounded greyish leaves which are white beneath. The petals of the flowers, which are borne in late spring inside, are red at the centre and white on the outside. They are complemented by a brush of showy red stamens with yellow anthers. The fruit is edible as are, apparently, the petals although I have never tried them. Propagation is by seed, which should be rinsed well three times before sowing to wash away any inhibitors, or by cuttings.
