Fatsia : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only / C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Araliaceae

Fatsia japonica, a native of Japan and Taiwan, shares the common name of Castor Oil Plant with Ricinus. It is hardy in most areas but is a useful foliage plant for the frost free or cool house and has an attractive variegated form. It is easily raised from seed sown in spring and produces heads of creamy flowers during winter. F. papyrifera (Tetrapanax papyrifera) is the plant from which Chinese rice paper is made from pith inside the shoots. It is well worth growing from seed and makes a tall plant with large silver-grey felt-covered leaves which are a furry orange-green when young. Not a plant for the small greenhouse if you want room for other plants as well.
