Dichroa : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only / C – cool, minimum of 7°C (45°F)

Family: Saxifragaceae

E Asia

The only species in cultivation is Dichroa febrifuga which is an unusual plant resembling Hydrangea to which it is related. Coming mainly from the Himalayas it is only hardy in the mildest areas and really needs a frost free or cool house. It is an evergreen shrub with heads of flowers which appear to be blue, pink and white at the same time. These are borne towards the end of the summer and are followed by small deep blue berries. It is more likely that one will find seed for sale than a plant. Having grown a plant it can then be propagated easily by shoot tip cuttings.
