Desfontainea : Greenhouse Plants

FF – frost free only

Family: Loganiaceae

There is only one species, Desfontainea spinosa. Hardiness of this attractive evergreen is dubious in most areas which is why it makes a good little shrub for a frost free house. It likes to be well ventilated in winter, cool and shaded in summer. Give it these conditions and you will be rewarded with tube-like red and yellow flowers in summer. If seed is obtainable this is probably easier than cuttings which should be taken in August about 8 cm (3 in) long.
