Dealing with slugs

Metaldehyde slug pellets are dangerous to hedgehogs, which are the best natural slug controllers, and also to birds, dogs and cats, so organic gardeners prefer to use trapping methods. Slugs are irresistibly attracted to beer. The traditional slug trap is an old soup plate sunk level with the ground and filled with a mixture of one part beer to four of water. This can be emptied of sozzled and drowned slugs with one swish of a birch broom. Another trick is to sink a wine bottle with its neck level with the soil, and pour just enough beer to come 1.5 cm (3/4”) above the bottom of the bottle. The slugs will crawl in, but will not be able to get out. You can dig up the bottle and dump it in the dustbin if it gets full.
