Cymbopogon : Greenhouse Plants

W – warm, minimum of 13°C (55°F)

Family: Graminae

The best repellant I know against midges and mosquitos is Citronella oil. I always used to think it was extracted from Citrus but it is based on an essential oil which comes from a grass called Cymbopogon nardus. A close relative, C. exultatus from Western Australia, is rather like a smaller version of pampas grass. It can be raised from seed and will make an attractive greenhouse plant which can tolerate very hot temperatures. Not surprisingly the leaves have a lemon scent when crushed.
