Conifer Trees: Araucaria Species

This very distinctive genus has given us one hardy species which is widely known and planted.

Araucaria araucana

Large tree. After ten years: 1.20-1.50m. Ultimate Height: 25-30m.

This is the unusual looking “Monkey Puzzle” tree. Although quite slow growing it will eventually make quite a large tree. It has a fairly open habit with thick dark green branches, the leaves arranged in spirals along the length of the branch. These are a deep glossy green and the pointed outer edges quite sharp. It is very hardy and grows successfully in moist soils.

With age it becomes more round topped and the bottom branches begin to fall off. When that happens it’s time to start thinking about planting another young specimen!

Araucaria araucana - this specimen is well over 100 years old
