Colour in the Garden: White and Green Scheme

Using white-flowered plants, and plants with green blooms, as well as foliage plants with plain green or green and white variegated leaves, will create a very cool, tranquil atmosphere. Shady corners often look good planted with green and white plants of which several suitable kinds are listed here. Don’t forget to include variegated hostas and some ferns in shady moist spots.

A selection of white-flowered plants follows. Unless otherwise stated, all of these plants need a sunny spot and well-drained soil.

WHITE AND GREEN GROUPS

Spring: a carpet of Erica carnea ‘Springwood White’ around Magnolia stellata.

Summer: generous groups of Alchemilla mollis (lime-green flowers) combined with hostas with green and white variegated foliage.

Summer: Phlox paniculata ‘White Admiral’ next to the white and green striped grass, Phalaris arundinacea ‘Picta’.
